In 1978, after the smallpox epidemic was virtually eradicated by the World Health Organization, one of the last remaining smaples of smallpox virus (in Birmingham, England) had escaped from containment and infected a medical photographer, Janet Parker.
Although in reality, the disease had only infected one person, this is where we found the inspiration for the storyline of our smallpox case-study.
