The hidden abuse of children
During, before and after war, children are often treated poorly, with girls being treated even worse. Boys are more favored and are treated a lot better, having a chance at education and more food available to them along with less work. These are the problems that organizations are facing when they work in third world countries. Maltreatment, lack of food, lack of nutrients, and poor sanitation are also problems that all nations worldwide are facing. These problems of child abuse and neglect are even worse in third world nations, and are also affected by individual country’s culture, government, and economy. Many have argued that the UN has failed to protect children, and more importantly, girls in those third world nations. Some of the issues that these girls face are child labor, prostitution, infanticide, forced marriages, genital mutilation, and rape. Their lack of an education at this age also affects them in the future as they start a family and get a job to support them. Their lack of education severely limits their ability to find good paying jobs. Their value as a human is severely lowered in many nations simply because they are female. Many arguments have also been made that the UN failed to promote the value of children and more importantly girls in these developing third world countries. Source: Kawewe, Saliwe, and Robert Dibie.
