Obesity in France

"One million people eat at one of the 1,009 McDonald's restaurants in France every day, and the French now also drink an average of 42 litres, or 74, pints of cola per person each year". -Caroline Wyatt

Schools in France are serving healthy course meals because they believe that good eating habits start in the early years of childhood. These schools start children off by eating healthy foods so that they would not get addicted to unhealthy foods such as pizza, burgers, or chips. For example, in a typical French school lunch, they serve grapefruit, grilled chicken, beans, cheese, and rice pudding for dessert. End off the day with a tangerine as a snack. Chips are offered once a week in a lunch. They would rather serve children salmon lasagna than burgers or sausage. When they serve pizza they balance it off with a salad so that the lunch could be healthier. These lunches come with water and if the students don’t like the lunch than they go home and eat.

France is scared by the fast paced increase in childhood obesity. Found in recent studies from the International Obesity Task Force show that a whopping 15% of French kids are overweight. Obesity is already affecting 15% of French under the age of 15. At the trends they are going right now, they are predicted to reach up to 25% by the year 2020. Even though the French are serving healthy meals to the children, they can’t control what they eat outside of school. The increase of obesity in France has caused schools to ban vending machines. Traditional meal are only eaten 20% by the population, the other percentages of meals lead to McDonald’s or some other kind of fast food place. There are a total of one million people who eat at one of the 1,009 McDonald’s restaurant in France. The French also drink on average 42 liters of cola a year. On average, a youth under the age of 15 consumes 39kg of sugar; most of it comes from snacks and sodas. Today, average French sugar consumption has increased by 11 kg.
