Obesity in Canada

"[The Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes]'s intent [is] to continue to build capacity and strengthen Canadian health research in all aspects of obesity/healthy body weight." -CIHR

Obesity in Canada is almost as big as a problem as it is in the United States.  More than half of Canadians are overweight or obese. This statistic is a little better than the sixty percent of Americans who are overweight or obese.

The cause of obesity in Canada and the United States is very similar. People live a very fast-paced lifestyle. They would rather drive their cars to work or eat fast food because there is no time to prepare food at home.In Canada, the number of obese people has been growing. In 1985 less than fifteen percent of the country was overweight or obese. Now nearly 50 percent is overweight or obese. Even though Canada keeps getting fatter, they are actually doing things about it. Last year they spent over 1.8 billion dollars on medical cost such as different diets, and liposuction.

Obesity is not always caused by eating too much, or by not getting enough exercise. Very often people are obese because they have obesity in there genes. Obesity could be one those family jewels that parents could give to their offspring. So if they're obese, than you might have a higher chance of being obese or overweight as well.
