Immigrants Driving Economic Growth

Over half of the growth in the labor force is due to immigrants. The mass arrival of immigrants has attracted over the whole country but, it was mostly felt in the Northwest. From a Census Bureau report between the years 1990 to 2001 immigrants were also filling in the job openings that demanded higher education like engineering and the high tech industry. During that decade the labor force also increased by almost 16 million to 141.8 million. Half of those people were immigrants that arrived during the escalating of the economic progress. The Census Bureau also has recent data in 1990 that shows a fifty percent increase of immigrants born which is about 31.1 million. Also during that same year Hispanic residents match up with blacks as the U.S.’s largest minority group.

The immigrant male labor force increase is more than female labor work force the male increased by 79 percent while the females have only increased 30 percent. Camarota, a group that is anti-immigration, said that letting immigrants work in low skilled jobs makes the wages low since there are more people going for the same job. They felt that it does not help the native people. The immigration policy has been debating over this problem for years. Some critics say that the immigrants are taking over the native-born workers. But one author says that without the immigrant workers the U.S economy would have toppled over the last decade.
