Illegal Immigration: Should the Punishment Fit the Crime?
There are many different levels of punishment for different crimes, but are the punishments for an illegal immigrant fair? Shouldn’t the penalties be based on how much damage it gives to others? Crossing the border illegally does not really hurt anyone, but something like a murder or a robbery clearly does. Those would be things counted as a felony. However, the Sensenbrenner immigration bill, which many people oppose to, made it so that the small crime of crossing the border illegally would receive a big penalty. Crossing the border or working with an illegal immigrant would be a felony. The person caught would spend time in jail and have a bad criminal record. Though with so many crossing illegally, it would not make sense to put them all to jail. It would be too overwhelming to the jail system.
The immigration bill, currently being evaluated by the Senate, is a different approach that will give a fine of $2000 to the illegal immigrant. Once the fine is paid, the immigrant will be able to go through the process of becoming a legal citizen.
