Terrance Gordon Sawchuk was born on December 28, 1929 in Winnipeg, Canada. Most know Terry as being one of the best goaltender to ever play in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played in the league for an outstanding twenty one years. Terry played for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, and most importantly the Detroit Red Wings. In his career he had an amazing shutout count of one hundred and three, eighty seven of which were for the Red Wings. He began playing for Hockey Town in the 1950-51 season, winning the Calder Trophy proving him to be the best rookie of the year. The next year he led the Red Wings to a Stanley Cup victory. Five years after playing for the Red Wings, he was traded. While traded he had difficulty playing up to par and retired. That same year, he was traded back to the Red Wings and began to play as he had previously, extremely well. Arguably one of the toughest players to ever play in the NHL, he played in a time before the goalie mask, as you can see on the legends bar above, he sustained many injuries and keep on going. As the years rolled by he began to wear the mask, but not after receiving more then six hundred stitches. Due to his depression Sawchuk enjoyed drinking. In an intoxicated fight with a teammate while playing for the New York Rangers Sawchuk sustained injures which lead to his death a few weeks later, but not after having won four hundred and seven games in the NHL.
