Mickey Redmond was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario in 1947. He entered the National Hockey League (NHL) playing for the Montréal Canadians for several years (1967-1971) helping them win two Stanley cups (68 and 69). Half way through his fifth season (1970-1971) in the NHL with the Canadians he was traded to the Detroit Redwings for Frank Mahovlich. His first full season playing in Hockey Town for the Red Wings he scored an outstanding 42 goals on a line with another Red Wing legend Alex Delvecchio, finishing off the next season with a final goal count of 52, surpassing the great Gordie Howe’s team record. Redmond is one of the few NHL players that has had two consecutive fifty point seasons. Tragically in only his fifth season (1974-1975) with the Red Wings he sustained a back injury limiting him to play only twenty nine games. The following season, due to his back injury, he lost his power and was forced into early retirement at the age of only twenty eight. Although he doesn’t play anymore he is a well known with Detriot Red Wings fans as an announcer for FSN Detroit, the broadcasting network hosting most Red Wings games.
