A quarter equals 25 pennies, a dime equals 10 pennies, and a nickel equals 5 pennies.
A dollar (written with the symbol $) equals 100 pennies.

Front US quarter US dime US nickel US penny
Coin quarter dime nickel penny
Value $ 0.25 $ 0.10 $ 0.05 $ 0.01
Back US quarter US dime US nickel US penny

Given different coins, one must be able to count the money in dollars one has.
The two examples below show two different methods.
In the first method, one directly converts to dollars. In the second method, one first converts to pennies and then to dollars (using $ 1 = 100 pennies).

Examples:

1 quarter + 2 dimes + 3 nickels + 4 pennies
= $ (1 X 0.25 + 2 X 0.10 + 3 X 0.05 + 4 X 0.01) = $ 0.64

2 quarters + 1 dime + 4 nickels + 3 pennies
= (2 X 25 + 1 X 10 + 4 X 5 + 3 X 1) pennies = 83 pennies = $ 0.83
