Prior to the 1964 Winter Olympic Games, Canada, represented by club teams, had played in 9 Olympic hockey tournaments.  They won 6 gold medals, 2 silver medals and one bronze medal. After the most recent gold medal (awarded to the Edmonton Mercurys at the 1952 Olympics in Oslo, Norway), it had become very difficult to find teams that were able to compete successfully for Canada in the Olympics against such countries as the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia.
