Endangered Ecosystem
Changes to the ecosystem are difficult, if not impossible to repair.
If poorly modified organisms that have the potential to wreak havoc are released into nature, there are no such things as “product recalls”. These "rogue" organisms have the destructive potential to unbalance the ecosystem, much like how exotic species today wreak havoc with the ecosystems, except on a much larger scale.
For example, scientists have genetically engineered salmon that is twice as big and grows much faster than conventional salmon found in the wild. Indeed, such a fish may sound like a dream for many producers in the fishing industry. However, studies have shown that should the genetically engineered salmon be released into the wild, it could be harmful to the existing salmon population as the genetically engineered version has behavioral characteristics that are much more aggressive.
