What We Can Do
Gangs are most definitely a prevalent issue in today’s society and it is necessary that strategic and humane efforts are taken to try and limit the violence and crime that accompany them. Gangs have evolved from what one may consider “a social problem” with a cultural stigma on them into a fully functioning culture that has been embedded into society. Culture is hard to kill, so instead of trying to kill the gang culture, revolutionizing that culture is in order.
Contrary to many people’s opinions, we don’t think that one can try to suffocate the gang culture by locking up gang members and expecting that to have community impact. Gang members are locked up every day. This just leads to the emergence of gangs in prison, which creates racial division in the prison system, as Blacks, Latinos, Asians and Whites are all pitted against each other. Then, once these men are released back into the community, racial division and hate still linger in their souls. So jail in our opinion is not a viable solution to the gang problem. We feel that reward is better than punishment and with that in mind, it would be empowering to communities to have rewards/encouragement for those who are at risk to be in a gang (and make what they feel is the right decision regarding them), more positive role model programs, gang education sites (which our website serves as) and other resources that current gang members and prospective gang members can use to be better informed of the lifestyle they may be committing to.
