General USA, he moved the Cherokee Indians to eastern Oklahoma, involved in the Mexican War, commander of the Department of the East and Department of the Pacific. War Service Highlights: On August 1861, he sent reinforcements to Fort Monroe to save it for the Union. He was promoted to Major General in the Regular Army on May 1862. He commanded the Middle Department and Deparment of the East, and later retired in August 1863. Nickname: None Died: November 10, 1869 Place of Death: Troy, New York Interesting Facts: John was the oldest officer to exercise active command on either side in the Civil War.
