Full Name: Winfield Scott Born: June 13, 1786 Place of Birth: Petersburg Virginia North or South: North Other Professions: Fought in every war from 1812, commander in chief of the Army. Wrote memoirs, travelled. War Service: 1861 Major General (since 1841), Union commander in chief, conceived the "Anaconda Plan", retired October 1861 after McClellan was made commander of the Army of the Potomac. Nickname: "Old Fuss and Feathers" Died: May 29, 1866 Place of Death: West Point, New York Interesting Facts: Scott ran against Franklin Pierce for president but lost. In 1856 he recieved a brevet promotion to the rank of a lieutenant general. Because of this he became the first American since George Washington to hold this rank!
