Full Name: Barbara Frietchie Born: December 3, 1766 Place of Birth: Lancaster, Pennsylvania North or South: North Died: December 18, 1862 Place of Death: Frederick, Maryland Interesting Facts: At 95 years old she stuck the Union flag out of her window as the Confederate troops were riding by. When Stonewall Jackson rode by he ordered his troops to shoot the flag. After he ordered them to shoot she said to him, "Shoot if you must, but spare your country's flag." Her bravery and patriotism inspired John Greenleaf Whittier to write the poem Barbara Fritchie, published in 1863.
