Interesting Facts: When she was thirteen she began dating James Chesnut. She went to live on his plantation with him when they were married. His sisters were there, his grandparents, and his paernts too. There were so many women on the plantation Mary didn't have anything to do, so she read and taught the slaves how to read and write. She also wrote famous diaries about the Civil War, which were later published.
