War Service Highlights: In 1861 he refused commission in the Union Army and he became a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. In 1863 he commanded troops at the Battle of Chickamauga under the command of Braxton Bragg. He was also in command of the Department of East Tennessee. In 1864 he was promoted to Lieutenant General, and worked to have General Bragg removed from office.
