Full Name: Simon Bolivar Buckner Born: April 1, 1823 Place of Birth: Hart City, Kentucky North or South: South Other Professions: Mexican War-resigned in 1855, businessman, Editor of newspapers, Kentucky Governor, Vice-Presidential nominee 1896. War Service Highlights: In 1861 he refused commission in the Union Army and he became a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. In 1863 he commanded troops at the Battle of Chickamauga under the command of Braxton Bragg. He was also in command of the Department of East Tennessee. In 1864 he was promoted to Lieutenant General, and worked to have General Bragg removed from office. Nickname: None Died: January 8, 1914 Place of Death: Munfordville, Kentucky Interesting Facts: Last survivor of the top three grades of the Confederate army.
