War Service Highlights: In October 1861, Breckenridge was a Brigadier General. He served mostly in the West. Breckenridge fought in battles at Vicksburg, Shiloh, Jackson and Chickamauga. From February to April, 1865, he served as secretary of war for the Confederacy. Breckinridge went to Europe when the South surrendered, and he returned in 1869.
