War Service Highlights: When the Civil War began in 1861, Richard Heron Anderson resigned from the U.S. Army and entered the Confederate service as a brigadier general. Promoted to major general on July 14, 1862, Anderson fought at the Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. In May of 1864 Anderson was promoted to lieutenant general serving under General Robert E. Lee.

Interesting Facts: Won the brevet of first lieutenant in the Mexican War in 1848 and captain in 1855.
