Many species of animals live in South Africa, and they are all affected by human activities in one way or another. Penguins, seals, seabirds and jellyfish are just some of the affected species, all affected by oil spills, other types of sea pollution, litter and human activities. Many jellyfish and fish can be found on beaches, along with an occasional seal or seabird, all dead, killed most likely by pollution or litter. Other types of animals, such as whelks or seagulls, then feed on the dead jellyfish, fish or bird. Whelks tend to feed on jellyfish, as seen in this photo. Other types of affected animals in South Africa include: Chacma Baboons, shot at or poisoned by angry homeowners in the Cape. Cape Hunting dog, shot by farmers and chased away by dogs. Various types of wild cats are also shot and killed by farmers. Many types of birds are also killed by farmers, who lay down poisoned seeds to keep bugs away, but it kills the birds too. |
