Protecting the public from shark attacks can stop people killing them, as they seem less of a threat. The following protection measures are used:
Nets:
Nets strung across a bay protect swimmers from sharks. Although this does protect the humans, it often kills the sharks as well as dolphins, seals and many other types marine life by entangling them. This method is widely used in Austrailia.
Shark Shield:
A device worn by ocean users sends sonar rays through the water. As the sharks are so sensitive to electrical waves, they find it highly uncomfortable and stay away from the point at which the pulses are being sent. They have been proven to be effective. Shark Shields can be bought from major surf shops or hired from surfing schools.
Educating the Public:
Educating the public about Great Whites can make them aware that sharks are not ruthless killing machines which will prevent aggression towards any sharks, GreatWhites in particular. in Cape Town, boards are scattered around the coast tellingpeople about the sharks. |
