What is Artificial Intelligence?

We've seen and heard about Artificial Intelligence from movies to toys such as the Aibo dog and Honda's Asimo. In short these are revolutionary "ROBOTS" created to function as real living creatures.

So what exactly is Artificial Intelligence? Well John McCarthy came up with a definition for Artificial Intelligence (AI). Yet you wonder who John McCarthy is to give a definition for such a brilliant topic? Well, John McCarthy is the Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University,a pioneer in artificial intelligence. John McCarthy invented LISP, the most important type of AI programming language, and first proposed general-purpose time sharing of computers. He identified common-sense rules that determined how certain functions were to happen and made these rules into codes. Along with other information, the codes put together to make a sentence became symbols in the language of AI databases.

 

 

What is Artificail Intelligence?

"It is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programmes."

 

Yet many can say that AI is not only about computers but also the intelligence exhibited by an artificial (man-made) being such as the Honda Asimo and Aibo.
