APRIL
The garden was a mess. I didn’t know what to do about it. There were old strawberry plants, tomato plants, and piles of dry dirt. I had to clean it up. I weeded and threw away old plants. I even dug up an old, small tulip.

I was going to start planting when it snowed. It covered everything except the fall daffodils. I even had a snow day off from school. So much for starting a garden then! I wanted to start planting right away but we went on spring break. I’ll see you when I get back.

Mom and I went to the store to get seeds, peat pots, and a soil kit. We went back home and added water that expanded the peat pots. A peat pot is shown on this page. We planted tomatoes, rosemary, onions, and squash in the peat pots. We checked on them every day. Nothing happened until one day…

Little onions were growing in the peat pots. We looked at those thin green stems. Soon the tomatoes were growing too. I hoped they would grow strong enough to live in the garden. But we had to see if our garden’s soil was good for planting.
