What is Freedom of Expression?   Freedom of expression is a right, that all American citizens have. Free expression means being able to wear, say, and do things of your choice. This right is given by the First Amendment, and applies to any American, regardless of age, gender, or skin color. In Tinker v. Des Moines (1969), the Supreme Court decided students and teachers also get this right in school, as long as it doesn’t “materially or substantially” 1 disrupt kids learning. Freedom of expression can be used in many ways from protesting a war to showing pride in your heritage or religion. Freedom of expression doesn’t apply if other students have reason to be offended, by what is expressed. School officials can’t take away students right to freedom of expression, just because they think it could offend people. Freedom of expression is very subjective, because what is a holy symbol to one student, could be offensive to another student. All parts of freedom of expression are subject to time, place, and manner restrictions. So don’t do something stupid, that might get you in trouble, just because you have a general right to.
