Sojourner Truth
Isabella, who is known as Sojourner Truth, was a slave who lived in Florence, Maryland. This woman was known for equality and justice. Her son, Peter, was taken from her and sold to a slave owner in Alabama. When that happened Sojourner moved to New York to work as a housekeeper. She moved there because July 4th, 1827 slaves were abolished in New York State. Isabella lived in New York for 15 years. After those 15 years she decided to become a traveling preacher. She is remembered for the speech “Ain’t I A Woman?” which she gave in Akron, Ohio in 1815 at the women’s rights convention.
