The Nat Turner Revolt
Nat Turner was a slave in Southampton, Virginia. His owner was Joseph Travis. Nat thought that God had picked him out of the many slaves to be the leader of a slave rebellion. On August 21st Nat killed his master and the master’s family so that the rebellion would launch. About seven other slaves took part in the action as well. All together fifty whites died and seventy-five slaves joined his rebellion after this even took place. Nat thought that when he accomplished his task that there would be a massive slave uprising, but he was wrong. There were over 3,000 people from the state militia that were sent over to Virginia to take care of Nat, but they were defeated. After this situation 100 innocent slaves were killed and Nat was forced to leave. He was found six weeks afterward and on November 11, 1831 Nat was executed.
