Texas prohibits manumission. Also the civil war begins in South Carolina. Slave riots began to escalate again and more laws were established in order to prevent this. Slaves had to be accompanied by their master when they went to a home of a family that was free because masters were scared they would run away. West Virginia is admitted as a free Union. South Carolina recruits black soldiers. Along with stopping African Americans from believing in their own religion they also said that if they did, they would never be freed.
