In the early days of American movie making, most motion pictures were
filmed in Hollywood studios. Aftertime, studios and producers
realized that they could save countless dollars by filming “on
location,” which produced a need for local film offices, and Maryland
was one of the states to catch on to the trend. As more and more
moviemakers discovered Maryland and other states, they decided to start
hiring local filmmakers to work with the Hollywood trained
craftspeople. After many years of working as inferiors to the
Hollywood crew, the locals became first–rate at executing their
careers. Because of the expertise of Maryland’s crews, the
studios recognized that they didn’t need to fly in the entire team;
they could now rely on our state’s crew to fill the advanced positions
that used to be taken by crewmembers from the studio. Following
the rise in “on location” filming, and the money it forked in for
its state or county, more places have built film offices. As a
result, the competition has grown vastly, so states and counties offer
monetary enticements to the studios. As you can see, the movie
industry in Maryland has grown tremendously in both popularity and
convenience, and it doesn’t seem like it will stop growing any time
soon.
