      Traditional Japanese clothes are worn according to the seasons. Japanese clothing is also worn also based off a person’s age or by the event.

       In the spring, bright colors and flower patterned Japanese clothes are worn. In autumn, Japanese clothes with fall colors and fall patterns are worn. Japanese clothing designs may include patterns or maple leaves. In the winter Japanese clothing with patterns and designs are worn for because they represent good luck and prosperity. The fabric of the Japanese clothing also changes during the seasons. In the summer they wear clothes made out of cotton whereas in the fall and winter they wear heavier or lined clothes. Woven pattern clothes, dyed clothing and clothing with repeated patterns are considered non formal Japanese clothes. These types of clothes would be worn as daily clothes, for non formal friend and family visits. 

 


        For women, traditional Japanese clothes like the kimono are not only worn because of the person’s age but also because of their status. Unmarried women wear kimono with long sleeves that are very colorful and have a lot of patterns on them. Married women or older women would wear simpler more covered clothes.

 

         Here is a list of some Japanese clothes that are worn daily:

Kimono - means clothes or things to wear is the everyday Japanese clothing

Yukata - the summer kimono

Haori - short silk jacket

Michiyuki - Overcoat

Hakama - Japanese pants

 

Footwear:
          The four basic types of Japanese sandals they are geta, zori, vinyl zori and the tatami. Japanese shoes come in a lot of different colors and styles, but red and black are the most popular.

Geta sandals:
           Geta sandals are any sandal with a separate heel. The word geta means “clack clack” in Japanese. They named it geta because of the sound it makes when you walk with it on. However, there are many other types of geta sandals including those made of vinyl.

 

         Wooden geta have a really flat front heal, making the person who is wearing it lean forward with every step. Geta sandals are not easy for some people to walk on and it takes lot of practice to walk in them correctly.

 

Zori Sandals Types
         Zori sandals are any Japanese sandals that have a flat bottom. Zori sandals include both the tatami sandals and vinyl zori sandals. The zori sandals are worn by both men and women and are made in a lot of different colors and materials.

 

Tatami Sandals
        The tatami sandals are known as casual Japanese sandals and are the most used for daily wear. The sandals are called tatami which means straw. The top of the sandal is made from flattened straw. The thong is made of velvet and comes in only two colors red or black.

 

Vinyl Zori Sandals
         The vinyl zori sandals are the most popular sandals they are worn for special occasions with the kimono. The sandals are made of velvet or vinyl and come in a lot of colors.

         These vinyl zori sandals are less formal than the black ones and they are the mostly used in the summer. They have a vinyl surface and the velvet sandals come in a many different of colors.
