Ancient Greece

In the 1800’s, when Amalia, the Queen of Greece, first to came Athens, she was a revolution for Greek fashion. When she arrived she saw how people dressed poorly. So, she decided to create a romantic court dress, which is still used by people today. The dress is named after her, Amalia.

It is worn with jacket and a cap or a toque. The cap is worn by married women and the toque by unmarried women. A black veil was added, when women used to go to church.

Men usually wore something called a foustanella, which is a white skirt, especially made for men. The wealthy people wear a silk turban around their heads and a gold vest on top of the skirt. We now see the men wearing that when there are celebrations, national days, and by soldiers/members of the special regiment.
