The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center will sponsor free head and neck cancer screenings from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 20 at the Eye and Ear Institute, third floor, 203 Lothrop St., in Oakland.
The event coincides with oral and head and neck cancer awareness week sponsored by the Yul Brynner Head and Neck Cancer Foundation. In 2007, more than 65,000 people will be diagnosed with oral, head or neck cancers and more than 12,500 will die.

Karpf, an endocrinologist who also worked at Merck 10 years ago, is convinced that once people understand how pervasive HPV is - that the virus causes genital warts as well as cervical cancer and there is strong evidence that it's linked to head and neck cancers - more parents will jump on the vaccination bandwagon. By then, use of the vaccine may have been proven effective for men as well.
