VOLCANO AND CAPPADOCIA

We are a group of grade 5 students. We were very affected by the sites which are published in the ThinkQuest library. Going through the sites we have learned a lot about different topics. This year, we are studying Cappadocia. Cappadocia is a small town which is located in central Turkey. Its name has been known since 6th century BC. It is believed that the name comes from the Hittite language. The Cappadocia area is named for Nevsher-Avanos-Ürgüp. These places were very famous for beautiful horses. It actually makes sense to all of us because horses can easily walk on soft soil. As the soil is very soft and different colors, local people  making interesting pots. In the past, these pots were used as a plate and saucepan. Flames do not affect soil made saucepans. Still in some restaurants the pot has been used. Anything that has been cooked in pots comes out as a delicious food. Nowadays, people cook specialty meat type of foods. On the other hand the pot has been used as decorative items in our houses.  In our site you will see a photo of a workshop. People make the pot without using any machines.  The soil is very rich so we get the best potatoes, grapes, pumpkins and pumpkins seeds. Pumpkin seeds are eaten like nuts. Caves are used as warehouses.

10 million years ago there was a very harsh eruption from Hassan Mountain.  The mountain is quite far away from the Cappadocia area. Even though it is far away lava and ash were pushed to these areas by wind and water. There again rain, wind and water with the help of Mother Nature had created magnificent shapes. Every year many tourists are visiting these places.

Cappadocia has an interesting historical background. In the past, people who accepted Christianity for the first time ran away from the Romans and settled here. They built underground cities and churches. They could live and pray in these underground churches. The cities had different levels for storing their food, cooking and living. During the wars people stayed there for a long time. During this time their main food was Pigeon eggs and mushrooms which were grown from the Pigeons fertilizers. The rocks actually are very soft so pigeons could easily build themselves a nest. There is a valley where many Pigeons live. Nowadays, farmers use the fertilizer as compost for the soil.

We would like to suggest that the Cappadocia region be named a Natural Wonder. At least once in our lifetime all of us ought to go on this interesting trip. The volcanoes are still a big danger in the world like earthquakes but when we see the beauty of Cappadocia people cannot help but to ask themselves, “Is this actually the result of volcanoes erupting?”
