Glossary Biomechanical-the development of prosthetics Bionic-comprising or made up of artificial body parts that enhance or substitute for a natural biological capability Cyborg-a human who has certain physiological processes aided or controlled by mechanical or electronic devices Prosthetic- a device, either external or implanted that substitutes for or supplements a missing or defective part of the body Osseo integration-the firm anchoring of a surgical implant (as in dentistry or in bone surgery) by the growth of bone around it without fibrous tissue formation at the interface Orthetics-a branch of medicine dealing with the making and fitting of orthotic devices Transfemoral-amputation above the knee Residual limb- the remaining part of the limb after amputation (the stump) Revision-surgical modification of the residual limb Endoskeletal prosthesis-one built more like a human skeleton with support and components on the inside and a cosmetic cover on the outside Exoskeletal prosthesis-a prosthesis that is hollow on the inside with a hard outer surface to bear weight
