It used to be a custom in Iran and still is in some places that some families would engage their son and daughter when they were born or a child. For example the family with the son would buy some gifts like a ring or expensive cloth and take it to the bride to be's house and say that we engage this boy and girl and when they reach the appropriate age they should marry.
During this unofficial engagement the boy and girl are not allowed to see each other and only the gifts are given to the bride through her mother. This kind of engagement has got its own rules. Some of them are listed below:
- the boy and girl have not reached the legal age.
-the boy and girl are still studying.
- The boy is serving military service.
-The boy hasn't found a suitable job yet.
- The boy is supporting his family.
