Way back in 1892,
James Naismith wanted a way to keep his students at YMCA(Young
Mens Christian Association)in Massachusetts. He decided to nail a peach basket
onto 10-foot poles and try to throw a soccer ball into them. It was first
played in a gymnasium with 9 people, on a court half the size of a
NBA
(National Basketball Association) approved court. One of the students proposed
the name of the game should be "Basket ball", and the name stuck.
Originally, players did not dribble, except for the "bounce pass".
The first balls for basketball were brown, but a man named Tony Hinkle decided
to brighten up the ball and make it orange in the 1950s. Also in the 1950s,
players were approved to dribble, due to the improved ball shape.
