African-Based Musical Styles
 
Afrobeat- Term used to describe the fusion of West African with Black American music.
 
Jit- hard, fast percussive Zimbabwean dance music influence by mbira-based guitar styles.
 
Kwela- South African flute (pennywhistle) music.
 
Marabi- African “jazz”.
 
Reggae- Originating in Jamaica, this internationally played sound is dominated by bass, drums, and guitar.
 
Salsa- Puerto Rican adaptation of Afro-Cuban music.
 
Negro Spirituals- Songs that were sung by African slaves in the Americas.  Their lyrics sometimes described plans of escape from the plantation or the comfort of going to an everlasting paradise once they died.
