Society has evolved rapidly in the last century, and with those changes come its many benefits as well as problems.

Instant messaging was launched in the late 1990s and it has since offered real-time conversations that are primarily based on typed text. It is less intrusive than communication via the phone or face-to-face communication. Statistics show that there are at least 27.2 million active users who use MSN while at least 22 million users use Yahoo! Messenger.

The hand phone was first created and released in the early 1990s via the miniaturisation of telephones. It was met with much popularity by youths due to its portability and affordability. Hence, the convenience brought by the handphone has seen the widespread usage among youths today. One of the most important functions is to enable communication without the need to meet up either via calls or text messaging which is also more commonly known as SMS.

The use of handphones has witnessed the surfacing of social problems such as “social disconnectivity” which encompasses problems as such the deterioration of family, peer or romantic relationships, depression or distraction from goals etc.

The advent of media, especially online media, has increased accessibility to information on the Internet. As a result, youths have been able to easily access highly violent movies such as Kill Bill and Battle Royale. Furthermore, as youths also have easy access to any game, highly violent and gory games like Doom and Resident Evil have started to take effect on the youths’ mindsets. Third, youths are also able to acquire explicit music and songs that are not suitable for their age. Last but not least, provocative music videos that very often include sexual themes.

Hence, the increased accessibility to information has led to a general increase of promiscuity among youths, as they are able to retrieve information regarding sexuality and violence very easily. To add on, other issues like bullying featured in media have also seen the increase in bullying rates.
