What would you eat in the army?

Each day a solier was given a ration witch was all of the food he would have for the day. A ration consited of a pound of bread and a pound of meat. he was also given a gill or four fluid ounces, of peas or beans and a gill of rum. That is what the soldier was suppose to get but he would be lucky if he even got half of that in a day.

The food that the soldiers did get was not very good. The bread was very hard. It was this way because the army made the bread with only wheat and water. The soldiers soaked the bread in warm water to soften it up. The meat was very salty. It was salted and then put in salt water to keep it from spoiling. That was to only way it could be kept good. Most of the soldiers boiled their peas or beans with their meat. That made the beans or peas soft and it also made the meat less salty. This created a very tasty stew.

The soldiers were instructed to mix their rum with their water. they were also given extra rum for doing extra work. They were also given extra rum for holidays or celebrations such as New Years Eve.
