PASSWORD - SOME DOS AND DONT'S

DO

  1. Have a long password
    (15 characters and longer)
  2. Use simple easy to remember phrases, with interspersed punctuation marks, uppercase characters, and numeric characters.
  3. Store password hints to help you remember your password
  4. Have different passwords for each user account you maintain
  5. Use password protected screen savers when you leave your computer
  6. Make your own password.

DON’T

  1. Have a simple short word for a password. It takes a talented hacker merely a few minutes to crack it.
  2. Use any of these for passwords
    – Login name, full name,  birthdate, social security number, dictionary words, place names, proper names, names of celebrities, literary characters, movie characters, license plate number, phone number, names of family members, the first letters of a common phrase.
  3. Store your password on files / password managers / notepads etc
  4. Have very similar passwords for different accounts, because if the hacker is able to gain entry into one account, he immediately has a free entry into the others.
  5. Use password saving features like Microsoft Auto-Complete
  6. Use recommended passwords that are published in magazines, or websites.
