A gene is a basic unit of heredity which consists of DNA. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a helix consisting of “genetic stairs.” These genetic stairs are arranged in a certain order. This order controls your body’s genetic makeup. Chromosomes are X-shaped pieces of genes and DNA. Parts of the chromosomes are made of bacteria and cyanobacteria, tiny particles of one celled or no celled spiral or rod shaped organisms.

The placement of the gene controls the amount of protein that is made by ribosomes. Ribosomes are tiny molecular structures that, when they stop in the cell, release protein molecules for the use of the cell.

The amount of protein produced by the ribosomes controls the organisms’ traits and characteristics, which can be anything from eye color to the speed of the body's metabolism. In one chromosome, there is an entire blueprint of every thing about the body and how the body will develop.
