Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder that involves having an extra chromosome 21. This disorder can cause mental and physical disabilities. Most children who have Down Syndrome can learn the same as other children but at a slower rate. There is a 1 in 800 - 1000 chance of a baby having Down Syndrome.
Sometimes, the extra chromosome 21 is carried on an egg or on a sperm. When this happens, the result is called translocation Down Syndrome This form of Down Syndrome can be inherited from either parent. In these cases, the adult has a rearrangement of chromosome 21 called a balanced translocation, and the parent shows no sign of Down syndrome.

Sometimes, a form of Down Syndrome called Mosaic Down Syndrome may occur when cell division occurs after fertilization and a mutation occurs.
