A human has 46 chromosomes.  Each of these chromosomes contains genes and DNA that make up the human.  Two of these 46 are called the sex chromosomes and dictate the gender of the human.  A female has two X chromosomes, while a male has an X chromosome and a Y chromosome.  This is usually written XX and XY.

Turner Syndrome is a serious disease associated with one of a woman’s X chromosomes.  Though most patients with this disorder are completely missing one of their X chromosomes, it is possible to have the disease and missing only part of an X chromosome.

This disorder affects a girl’s development into a woman.  Most of the time a girl’s ovaries will not develop properly or not at all, causing her not to go through menstruation or to mature into an adult.  As a result of this, the woman tends to be infertile.
