Sickle cell anemia is a type of disease which is also called sickle cell disease and Hemoglobin SS disease. This is due to the fact that it is caused by mutated hemoglobin called Hemoglobin S. Sickle cell anemia is a recessive trait. This means that in order to have the full disorder, the trait has to be passed on to the child from both parents.

Father (XYs) Mother (XsX)
Child (XsXs)
If a child inherits Hemoglobin S from one parent, then he or she will have sickle cell trait.
Father (XsY) Mother (XX)
Child (XYs)

However, if he inherits this protein from a parent and then inherits another mutated form of hemoglobin, he will probably get a different form of sickle cell disease, such as thalassemia.
