Cri Du Chat Syndrome is French for “cry of the cat” since the cry many patients of the disorder have resembles one of a cat. This is due to the abnormal development of the larynx. Cri Du Chat may also be called “Cat Cry Syndrome” or “Chromosome 5p deletion syndrome."
Cri Du Chat Syndrome results from a missing arm of chromosome 5. This chromosome affects cell growth and it may cause several conditions, the most severe being mental retardation. Though some of those affected are unable to live alone, many patients are able to live normal lives with normal life spans.
