The Quakers, a religious group of people who came to America in the 1600s and 1700s, settled into small communities across New England. They were trying to find a religion that did not have strict rules, as the Church of England did.  They were persecuted primarily in Massachusetts. 

In 1712, William Penn had a stroke and became crippled.
