In the 1960s, people started referring to America as a mosaic, instead of a melting pot.

More Information

Many American citizens have opposed immigration for years. Negative feelings about immigrants began as far back as the 1600s. African slaves, immigrants from Scotland, Ireland ,Italy, and now Mexico have been discriminated against.

Even today some Americans do not want to admit it, but all Americans have come to depend on immigrants in a variety of ways. Some depend on new immigrants to harvest crops, work in factories, or work in restaurants, and care for lawns - which are jobs that many native Americans do not want to do.  Colleges happily accept students from other countries who wish to major in engineering and computer programming because not many American students are majoring in these topics.

To show that immigrants are good for our country, many groups of immigrants have organized rallies.  Over the years, rallies have been held in these cities: Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, and Denver.
