Angel Island, the Immigration Station, was an entry port for roughly 175,000 Asian immigrants. Opened in 1910, it was built to manage the Asian immigrants coming to America.  The island has been called the "Ellis Island of the West.”  According to the Columbia Encyclopedia, the Spanish explored Angel Island, the largest island in the San Francisco Bay area, in 1775. The United States took control of it in 1851, and from 1863 to 1946 the island was used as an army base.
