Maces were weapons made of bronze or iron with strong heads and were 3-4
feet long. These weapons weighed 20-40 pounds and the head of the mace had
curvy spikes, a very thick interior, and occasionally, had a long spike coming
out of the center of the head (the top). Maces did lots of damage.
Morning Stars closely resembled maces except it was more lethal and more
brutal. The iron heads alone were able to crush skulls, but the 1-1/2 foot long
spikes as sharp as needles could puncture anything that had the misfortune to
be swung at.
Morning stars were over 2 feet long to the limit of 8 feet, as an 8-foot morning star
was found. These weapons weighed 30-120 lb.
Clubs were very simple, breakable sticks shaped like cones with smooth edges. Clubs were made of bark or metal and measured 1-3 feet and about 15 lbs. Clubs gave trauma, shattered bones, and were some of the most common weapons to barbarians.
Battle Axes were axes specially designed as weapons. These weapons were
designed in a way so that there is a cleaver on a
metal or wooden hilt and can be two-sided. Battle Axes can weigh 40-50 lbs and
were 1-5 feet. Battle axes are designed to cut flesh.
Flails were bamboo sticks with several chains supporting a weight filled
with spikes. Sometimes, more
than one weight was added to inflict more damage. Flails were about three feet
long and weighed 15 pounds.
Spears were ancient weapons carried by many civilizations. StickXMetal + DaggerXTop= Spear. Spears were up to 8 feet long and weighed 10-15 pounds. Spears were used for two purposes: Throw and impale. Most spears were easy to break, but some were indestructable.
Bows were weapons that shot dagger-like projectiles called arrows that were designed to pierce skin. They weighed 3 pounds and were up to 3 feet long. Arrows weighed 1/2 pound and were rumored to be at least as long as 4 feet!!!
Shields were protective devices, meant to intercept attacks. Barbarian shields were in two different types: One was the Roman-made round shield, and the other was the classical “V” shaped shields. Size and weight varied greatly, as warriors relying on speed and surprise would carry light shields that were small. Shields were up to 4 feet tall and 16 lb. Usually, barbarians stole shields from dead Romans’ bodies.
