The first Olympics was held in Athens, Greece. It was very similiar to the Summer Olympics. The ancient Greek Olympics were held every four years, like it currently is. The first ancient Olympics was in 776 B.C.E. and the last was in 393 C.E. At that time, the main sports were boxing, discus, equestrian events, javelin, jumping, pankration, pentathlon, running, and wrestling. Other events were the stade, diaulos, and dolichos, all of which are foot races. Australia has competed in events such as: track and field, swimming, team sports, boxing, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, gymnastics, modern pentathlon, rowing, shooting, weightlifting, freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, archery, volleyball, javelin throw, and yachting. As you can see, some events are the same, while others were added or removed. |
