Mayan Sports |
The Mayan's main sport was the ballgame. They believed that human sacrifice was essential for all aspects of life. Playing in the ballgames required a lot of armor, skill, and agility. The ballgames were an important part of Mayan life.
The high plateus and flat tropical plain of the Yucatan Peninsula were ideal for the Mayans to play their ballgame. The smooth land was suitable for the ball court on which they played the sport. Since the land was already even, the Mayans did not have to carve a level area into a hill or mountain. Although there is evidence that some ball courts were cut into the mountains, the flat ground made it easier for the Mayans to play their sport.
